Board: California RT Exam: Information California Restorative Dental Technique Course This examination is of eight hour duration and requires Class Il amalgam preparation and restoration, a partial coverage preparation from which is made a die and wax pattern in articulated casts, and an esthetic casting preparation including the possibility of partial coverage on a premolar or a PFM on premolar or anterior tooth. It is required of all dentists from non-accredited schools prior to taking the CA Clinical examination for licensure. We have training courses for this examination which cover four months of intense work - hands on instruction at DSI weekly or biweekly, homework, study of videotapes and models and mock board examinations. This program has been tremendously successful over the years and has brought dentists to DSI from around the world. There are many small groups scheduled for each exam so that Dr. Duggan may work personally and intensely with each student. There is a 2 1/2 week Short Course scheduled for each exam for people who cannot attend during the time required for the long course but need some hands-on instruction, studying tapes and models at home and sending their work through the mail for critique. The instructional principle that underlies the success of this course is that each student must work at home enough to bring back a preparation that they feel is good. When Dr. Duggan evaluates this preparation then there is a critical modification of concept of what is good, so that in time a more refined goal can be met. The more teeth are actually cut at home, the more coordination will improve - but it is the fundamental understanding of the design that is most important at this stage. During the class Dr. Dugan demonstrates methods and techniques as well as evaluates homework. Each student is helped along the way to the creation of the best possible work. Strategy and organization is an important part of the examination and is built in to the third month of the class. Everything is taught in two months, then refined during the third month. The culmination of this work is the Mock Board examinations, where all preparations are graded on standard Board forms and discussed on high magnification video camera. After the mock board, all students may watch the movie and see their work and other's ( number coded ) critiqued. Many helpful hints are reminders are driven home during these effective Mock Board sessions.
