Nevada Board Review

Having helped candidates prepare Dental Board over a period of several years, we have seen the demand increase dramatically. While we have emphasized the California Board in our courses that have trained over 500 candidates in comprehensive 1 weeks training, we have now decided to institute a concentrated and dedicated Nevada board course.  The schedule involves three weekends, emphasizing the three clinical areas of the examination. One weekend is reserved for the Class II, an area that we have "specialized" in for over seven years. One weekend is for partial coverage casting design. Each weekend involves 16 hours of work, mostly hands-on. Videotapes will be sent ahead of time to study the fundamentals, and during class - for each exercise, after brief discussion we start preparing teeth. Mostly mounted, extracted teeth are used, in order to maximize the problem-solving requirements.  Ivorine teeth are only used initially to confirm the understanding of the ideal designs.  A more detailed description of the restorative classes is given on appended schedule sheets. These classes are suitable for Nevada Board preparation or remediation ( we are certified by the Nevada board to remediate in any area ) or for general refinement of skills and concepts that have slipped during the years since dental school!

As part of the Nevada Board Review we also have a weekend devoted to removable prosthodontics. During this period dentures will be constructed for actual patients in our clinic. Dentures will be made up to the wax try-in stage but will not be processed. The prosthodontics section will be smaller, to maximize hands-on experience with the patients. There will be a maximum of four students with four patients and four observer students. The students who will be able to bring their own patients are chosen on a first come first served basis. The prosthodontics section is directed by Dr. Robert Riegel who has been on the removable prosthodontics faculty at LLUSD for over 10 years, practices in California and is licensed in Nevada.

To give you a little more background on DSI, this board review and CDE institute was started in 1992 in response to a demand for training for California Boards, both the clinical and restorative technique exams ( bench test ). The clinical course was taught at LLUSD over twenty times, generally with enrollments of 30 students. All courses are now off-campus at DSI and we have added National Board and Post4icencure courses ( Endodontics and Prosthodontics ).  Our emphasis has always been hands-on and basic principles.  No student leaves our courses without understanding what should be and why - and mostly they can achieve it too!   Over the years we've worked with over a thousand dentists and there's very little we haven't done, seen, or taught!  Dr. Duggan teaches full time at Loma Linda as well and has since 1992. Having closed his private practice 3 years ago, he's devoted all his efforts to teaching in any format he can. His responsibilities at LLUSD are from Freshman dental anatomy to senior board preparation.  At DSI we've been able to use the most modern and innovative techniques, including intra-oral cameras and permanently mounted high-magnification video cameras.  We even use these techniques for working with students through the mail, evaluating patient's X-rays and casts and preparations on typodonts.  Our collection of videotapes, covering Class II preps on Ivorine and natural teeth, PFM's, full crown preparations, partial veneers, on lays and many hours of videotaped patient evaluations for hoards, is beyond compare. Dr. Duggan and the other instructors here will not hesitate to show you how to do anything we teach. It is commonly observed that teachers who talk and critique often don't show! Technique is certainly as important as results - even if you can get a good result with poor technique it will often be slower or do more damage. Most dentists don't regularly do 3/4 crown preparations in their practice, and may not realize that there are several skills required that are beyond those familiar for full crowns!

For the Nevada Board Weekends we have scheduled initial preps on Ivorine in typodonts, then moving to natural teeth. So start collecting natural teeth for practice.  All natural tooth preps are done in a manikin to simulate board conditions, with a rubber dam.  For the amalgam Class II the ideal outline form and internal forms are made first followed by specific extensions for defined causes.  We do a variety of very controlled preps on various teeth in order to execute the most conservative possible restoration of each tooth - emulating what you should also be doing in your practice.  For the casting preparation we emphasize 3/4 crown and on lay preparation- often performing a pinned buildup for the 3/4 crown. Again we solve problems as they arise on real teeth.  All classes are preceded by the use of selected videotapes at home so the principles will be freshly in mind at the start of the hands-on class.  Our main concern is that you get a more refined concept of what conservative dentistry is and that will help you get through the exam and have a more fulfilling practice.  Notes from several former students (all practicing dentists in California with decades of experience ) will help to confirm the benefits of our program.

Bear in mind also, that if you are traveling from the East coast and successive weekends are difficult, we may be able to put together a week-long course, depending upon demand and time of year.

If you have any question, don't hesitate to call Dr. Lana Borukhova. She is our course manager and schedules hundreds of students into many courses each year.  She has the current course dates for the next review.

Comments from former students!
"Even though I have been practicing dentistry for 26 years and have passed two State Board Exams in the past, I would have been at a tremendous and perhaps overwhelming disadvantage without the preparation Dr. Duggan's course provides."  "He is a great teacher and he can do what he teaches. He can help you achieve the results you desire" L.R.P., Rancho Cucamonga, CA.

"... the course is a real eye opener to me and was a practical help to me in my day to day practice. The sharpening of my skills and awareness has been of great benefit to me and my patients."  "...your own personal touch in every aspect of the course and gentle but accurate suggestions as to where I may improve are greatly appreciated. I highly recommend the course."
B.M., Laguna Hills, CA.
